Starting several years ago with just a few budding traffic islands around the city,
the 'Adopt-an-Island' program has added a colorful touch to the natural resources
and varied geology that greets both the visitor and local resident of Holyoke.

The program's chairman David G. Healey coordinates the efforts of over 100 businesses and
individuals to plant flowers, bulbs and shrubs on City traffic islands and waysides.

Each spring, the "Start to Plant" call
goes out to the volunteer caretakers, and another season of brilliant hues that illustrate
and illuminate our streets begins.
