How to take a soil sample for testing

Soils that look different, or have been used differently, should be sampled and tested separately. Avoid sampling when the soil is very wet or recently limed or fertilized.
  1. Dig a hole 6-8 inches deep (3-4 for lawns) and set aside.
  2. Using a clean trowel, take a thin vertical slice from the side of the hole, place in clean container.
  3. Take at least 5 samples from the test area and mix in a clean container.
  4. Place a cup full of this mixed soil in a small sandwich bag, close tightly, and LABEL (Lawn, Vegetables, or Flowers) from the area that you have taken the sample from and mark it on the outside of the bag.
  5. Don't forget to go back and fill in the holes that you made in step one.
